“Valuation of cotton dust waste for the treatment of dyes in colored wastewater from the textile sector” This project synthesized under the name DESTINTCOT was led by HIDROCOLOR, a fabric dyeing and finishing company together with TEXFOR.
The waste generated in the textile industry (approximately 2% of Catalonia's waste) is classified as mechanical or chemical waste. The first are those generated, for example, when fibers are manufactured, and dust is an example. The latter are generated in the finishes of the fibers and examples are dyes which are classified according to their chemical structure. These wastes are mainly treated together with the wastewater generated in the dyeing process through intensive treatment in a wastewater treatment plant where organic matter and salts are a great challenge.
The DESTINTCOT project has had as its main objective the implementation, at the pilot study level, of a chemical process to absorb the color present in the wastewater generated by the dyeing process with cotton dust from the production of regenerated cotton spinning. . The ultimate purpose of this project has been to valorize the cotton dust generated in a spinning mill, considered waste, applying circular economy criteria when it is reused by a third party in the same sector. Another objective has been to recover the saline water used in the dyeing process since, once the dye is separated, it is suitable to be reused in the next dyeing process and thus avoid the consumption and treatment of a fraction of the company's waste water.
This project has been co-financed by the Waste Agency of Catalonia by 75%. For the technical execution of the project, EURECAT collaborated.
