Ongoing project

TeixRec. Study of productive capacities of weaving and dyeing and finishing processes of fabric with recycled fiber content, pre and post consumption and challenges to increase production.

The studio will accelerate the entire process towards the circularity of the industry and will help in the management of pre- and post-consumer textile waste

The new legislative framework prepared by the EU and national regulations for textiles, with a horizon of 2030, foresee that production uses recycled material. This will force the textile waste to be recycled and the raw materials to come from pre- and post-consumer recycling. Currently, the starting point of industrial production capacities is unknown, in terms of primary products (spinning, weaving, dyes and finishes) that contain recycled fiber. The challenge increases if we think about post-consumer fiber, because there are still technical difficulties that must be solved (scalability of chemical recycling, automated separation, elimination of improper materials, sufficient quantities and quality of raw materials, etc.).

Make the textile sector aware of what they are the productive capacities of companies weaving and dyeing and finishing of fabrics will accelerate the entire process towards the circularity of the industry and will help in the management of post-consumer textile waste.

The project TeixRec, lead by Texfor – Confederation of the Textile Industry and financed by The Catalan Waste Agency – ARC, was born with the objective of carrying out an exhaustive analysis of the companies dedicated to the production of fabrics and dyeing and finishing processes in Catalonia (370 companies, to know their production capabilities, incorporating recycled textile material, pre/post-consumer. It is also intended know possible problems in production or manufacturing limitations, analyzed by type of recycled raw materials: cotton, wool, polyester, etc. It will last 18 months.

The results of the project will allow prepare and have an online catalog of real and updated data, the production of weaving and dyeing and finishing processes with recycled material that will be very useful to accelerate the use of this type of product by producers, facilitating its supply. The project wants to help accelerate the transition towards a more circular textile sector.

TeixRec Qualitative Objectives:

  • Learn about the challenges of weavers, dyers and finishers to use recycled fiber and increase the production of fabrics and finished fabrics with recycled content fiber by fiber for different waste streams: cotton, wool, polyester and synthetic fibers. Indicator: Challenges report.
  • Know data on productive capacities of weaving and fabric dyeing and finishing factories with pre- and post-consumer recycled fiber content for different waste streams in Catalonia.
  • Promote circularity and the use of recycled raw materials in the textile value chain Indicator: number of participants in the conferences, impacts on publications on social networks and visits to the digital catalog Evaluation Actions carried out

Quantitative objectives of the project:

  • Get data from a minimum of 50 units productive weaving plants and dyeing and finishing factories for different raw materials.
  • Drafting a report on productive capacities of weaving and fabric dyeing and finishing factories with recycled fiber content, pre and post-consumer, for different waste streams in Catalonia.
  • Writing a report on challenges and barriers to circularity of the weaving production units and dyeing and finishing factories for different raw materials: Cotton, wool, polyester.
  • Dissemination days. Celebrate 3 dissemination days, 1 of Catalan scope, 1 of national scope, 1 of international scope.
  • Create a Digital Catalog with the productive capacities of weavers, finishers and dyers to facilitate supply by clothing makers and producers.
