The new legislative framework prepared by the EU and national regulations for textiles, with a horizon of 2030, foresee that production uses recycled material. This will force the textile waste to be recycled and the raw materials to come from pre- and post-consumer recycling. Currently, the starting point of industrial production capacities is unknown, in terms of primary products (spinning, weaving, dyes and finishes) that contain recycled fiber. The challenge increases if we think about post-consumer fiber, because there are still technical difficulties that must be solved (scalability of chemical recycling, automated separation, elimination of improper materials, sufficient quantities and quality of raw materials, etc.).
Make the textile sector aware of what they are the productive capacities of companies weaving and dyeing and finishing of fabrics will accelerate the entire process towards the circularity of the industry and will help in the management of post-consumer textile waste.
The project TeixRec, lead by Texfor – Confederation of the Textile Industry and financed by The Catalan Waste Agency – ARC, was born with the objective of carrying out an exhaustive analysis of the companies dedicated to the production of fabrics and dyeing and finishing processes in Catalonia (370 companies, to know their production capabilities, incorporating recycled textile material, pre/post-consumer. It is also intended know possible problems in production or manufacturing limitations, analyzed by type of recycled raw materials: cotton, wool, polyester, etc. It will last 18 months.
The results of the project will allow prepare and have an online catalog of real and updated data, the production of weaving and dyeing and finishing processes with recycled material that will be very useful to accelerate the use of this type of product by producers, facilitating its supply. The project wants to help accelerate the transition towards a more circular textile sector.
